Most free invoice tools are built for freelancers billing a day rate. Electrical work is not shaped like that: a single job mixes labour, materials and sometimes a test certificate, and the customer wants to see which is which before they pay.
Add a line per element, mark each one as labour or materials, and the invoice reads the way your customer expects. If you are working under CIS, that same labour and materials split is what drives the deduction, so you only enter it once.
Certificate numbers and scheme details
There is no legal requirement to put your NICEIC, NAPIT or Part P registration on an invoice, but it reassures a domestic customer and costs you nothing. The notes field is the natural home for it, alongside the certificate number for any EICR, EIC or Minor Works you have issued for the job.
For notifiable work under Part P, remember the building control notification is a separate obligation to the invoice. The invoice records the money, the certificate records the compliance.
CIS if you are subcontracting
Plenty of electricians invoice domestic customers directly one week and subcontract to a main contractor the next. Those are different invoices. Direct to a homeowner, there is no CIS and usually no reverse charge. Under a contractor, both can apply.
Turn CIS on and the deduction comes off the labour element only, before VAT, at 20% if you are registered or 30% if you are not. Materials are never deducted from, which is the mistake that costs subcontractors the most money.
Nothing you type is sent to us
The whole thing runs in your browser. Your business details, your client's details and your prices stay on your own device, and the PDF is built there too. We do not need your email to use the generator and we do not store your invoice.

Frequently asked questions
Is the invoice generator really free?
Yes. Build as many invoices as you like and we email you every one as a PDF. There is no signup, no trial and no card required. The only thing on the finished invoice is a small 'Made with Zappy' line in the footer.
What should an electrician's invoice include?
The legal basics apply to every trade: a unique invoice number, your business name and address, the customer's details, a description of the work, the supply date, the invoice date, the amount owed and the payment terms. For electrical work it is also worth listing labour and materials separately, and noting any certificate number you issued for the job.
Should I put my NICEIC or NAPIT number on the invoice?
You do not have to, but it is worth doing. A domestic customer comparing two invoices will trust the one that shows a scheme registration. Put it in the notes field along with any certificate number for the job.
Do I charge VAT on electrical work?
Only if you are VAT registered, which is required once your turnover passes the threshold and optional below it. Most domestic electrical work is standard rated at 20%. Some qualifying work in residential conversions or energy-saving installations can be reduced rated, so check the specific job if you think it applies.
Does it handle CIS deductions?
Yes. Mark each line as labour or materials, turn CIS on, and the deduction is taken from the labour element only, before VAT, at 20%, 30% or 0% for gross payment status. The invoice shows the total and the amount payable after the deduction.
Is my data stored anywhere?
The invoice is built in your browser, and your last one is kept in your browser's local storage so a refresh does not lose it. Start again clears it. When you ask us to email the PDF we keep that invoice and your email address so we can send it and so you can pick it up again later. We never sell it on, and marketing emails are a separate tick box you can opt out of at any time.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a phone the form breaks into short steps with the preview at the end, and the finished PDF arrives by email exactly as it does on a laptop. Handy for invoicing from the van before you have driven home.
